For eight summers she did the kind of job Americans don’t want to do, according to the “experts” – picking blueberries on a New Jersey farm. After her parents divorced, she was just three, and was raised by her mother, grandmother and two unmarried aunts. Her first big accomplishment was winning the New Jersey Blueberry Princess pageant at age 16.
Four years later she won the World Champion Blueberry Packing competition. She could pack 300 crates a day. Although she also excelled as a student and cheerleader at St. Joseph’s High, her heart was with the farm:
“Everything I learned about life and business started on that farm.”
She went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts degree magna cum laude in political science from Trinity College, Washington, D.C., and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Her next step was a Juris Doctor with honors from the George Washington University Law School in 1992.
She married a Filipino-American lawyer and they have four children, including twins, and live in Alpine, NJ.
In 2005, she co-authored What Women Really Want: How American Women Are Quietly Erasing Political, Racial, Class, and Religious Lines to Change the Way We Live (Free Press/Simon & Schuster, 2005.
She started her own polling company, geared toward women and boasting major corporate accounts, including American Express, ABC News, Major League Baseball, and the Ladies Home Journal. She even won the Washington Post’s “Crystal Ball” award for accurately predicting the outcome of the 2004 election.
In 2014, she coauthored a memo for the pro-amnesty group FWD.us that supported a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants living in the United States.
